Monday Sept 23
Our challenge question this morning was explaining what kind of chores or responsibilities you have at home and explaining why it is important. Then we worked on brainstorming what ecosystem means. Students worked in table groups to share ideas then we shared with whole class. After this brainstorming we created a meaning of ecosystem and made a chart in our SS books. Ecosystems include everything that interacts and makes a community of life in an area, both living and non-living. Also in the morning, we tried to log onto computers for the first time. There were some bumps with this as the student numbers given were incorrect and a lot of students forgot their passwords from last year. This year new passwords will be made.
In the afternoon, the challenge was to choose one animal that you would want as a pet and explain why this animal would be so great. Using the learning from the morning about ecosystems we then created a T chart in our visual journals with the headings Biotic (living) and Abiotic (non-living). We headed to the Bridlewood wetlands for the afternoon to do some observing. In their nature nook places, students used their senses to jot information about what biotic and abiotic things were part of the ecosystem in this wetlands. You would be surprised how many abiotic things were part of it. We were back in time for the bell and some reminders.
Reminders:
- tomorrow is picture day......good excuse to get all dressed up and do your hair
- the class is needing parent volunteers for a couple of field trips coming up quickly
- First....Oct. 3 we are going to the new Central Library to listen to a guest speaker. Volunteers for this trip will need to provide own transportation downtown....sorry the bus will be full of 3 classes
- Second trip is Oct. 8 we are going to Cross Conservation all day...volunteers on the bus
We need about 3 - 4 volunteers for each trip.... especially the Oct. 8 Cross Conservation Volunteers need to have a valid police clearance, they are good for 5 years. Contact Calgary Police Service. I believe it can be done online and it is free.
