Thursday March 19 free math website to check out

Hello to all my dear students. I am sure you are feeling a little confused and wondering what this all means. You should have received a message from all the grade 4/5 teachers on Monday. It was and still is very strange in the school with no students. I would like you to know that I, and the entire school are thinking of you and hoping you are being safe and staying healthy. I hope you are trying to practice learning every day, no matter what it may look like. Use some of the ideas from the CBE that were sent out to families the other day. I just received this gift and am passing on the website so that you can have some fun with it. It is from the same site that has the number puzzles we have done in class. There are a lot of other great puzzles and activities for you to try at home. It is given free so no worries about payment. Give it a try and have some fun! https://mashupmath.com/blog/free-homeschool-math-resources Please feel free to drop me an email and check in, it would

Friday March 13

Not sure if it was the fact that it is Friday the 13th or really being ill, but the class was down 7 students today. We had our Thank You Friday circle and discussed some of the news that was released yesterday regarding today and next week. This was the information that was sent home yesterday via school messenger. We worked on the math assessment some more adding more solutions and communicating for how many numbers would make the statement true. We also had time to continue working on our Refugee news article and finishing up the Canadian history figure paragraph. As a special activity, our class along with a few other classes who didn't see the Evergreen performances yesterday, were able to watch the final show today. Sorry the parents were not allowed to come and watch it, but it was video recorded. At some time this year, it will be made available to be seen. Reminders: - there are no conferences next week - Thursday next week is an early dismissal and Friday is a PD day

Thursday March 12

It was a great day at the Glenbow Museum. The students had fantastic programs in the morning and afternoon. They looked at art through the lens of one of the people or objects in the art using the senses of SIGHT, HEARING, SMELL, FEELING and I WONDER. Students used these observations and created poetry. It was beautiful. Students also had the opportunity to create their own art piece from the senses of SMELL, TOUCH, HEARING and SIGHT. Students were shown multiple exhibits and given opportunity to sketch their favourites or pieces that caught their interest. It was a great day and I thank the parent volunteers who joined us and made it possible.  Reminders: - no Evergreen Theatre performance tomorrow for parents or public to watch - there are no conferences next week - please read the previous blog for more info and check your school messenger

Wednesday March 11

This morning we talked about hand washing and being clean. Basic stuff to help remain healthy. We also talked about the field trip tomorrow. Then the class worked on a math activity that is being used as an assessment. This is very similar to the kinds of questions we have worked on the past week. It was all about communicating understanding of multiplication and number sense. More time will given to complete this as we had to go to music and gym. When back in the room the class worked on their paragraph about why their historic Canadian should be considered for the $5 bill. There are a few students who will finish this on their own time now. In the afternoon, the class worked on writing their summary of the Refugee book from one of the characters. They were able to see a model of how their article could be written and the kinds of information to include. They were to complete the graphic organizer to jot down the important facts and events, then begin writing their rough copy in the

Tuesday March 10

Morning math was proving whether an equation was true or not.  It included division, multiplication, adding and subtracting to keep us on our toes. The class went to music and then finished up the morning math and then began some division practice. We are still learning the partial quotient method and most students have an understanding of it. The biggest area of errors is multiplying. Knowing the basic facts and being able to subtract accurately is super important. This work took us to gym time where the class began practicing dribbling as part of basketball skills. When back in class there was time to continue working on their newspaper summary of a character from Refugee. In the afternoon, the class worked in literature circles on their novels and jobs. After this the fours went to Ms. Tanya and the fives came here for health. Reminders: - field trip Thursday, may want to bring hand sanitizer to keep hands clean

Friday March 6

What a day! The kids were super excited to perform their play for the audience today. We had a short practice time with our professional Judith before the performance began and then busied ourselves with other work while waiting for our turn on the stage! The costumes looked great and everyone said their lines with voice and expression that the whole gym could hear. We hope you enjoyed the show if you were able to come and watch. When we were not performing or practicing we had Thank You Friday where almost everyone shared something to be thankful for. We are aiming for the whole class to have a thank-you the next time. We also reviewed yesterday's math problem about how many different ways could this expression be solved: ?x?=150 and ?x?=1 500. We are practicing communicating our thinking and showing our knowledge clearly. It might not be as simple as writing the equations. Explaining or showing how a particular equation makes these numbers was the goal. We also worked on the wr

Monday March 9

Morning math and then into the main math lesson was another look at communicating how students know that two numbers multiply each other to make a given product. There is more to showing what you know than just writing the equation that is true. Pictures, words, and symbols are all used to convey knowledge. Being organized and clear is key for sharing strategies. After this we worked on writing the paragraphs about the Canadian people the students chose for consideration for the $5 bill. Out of the paragraphs finished, we will choose which ones should be entered. In the afternoon, the class worked on a newspaper article project for the novel Refugee. Students chose one character that they knew well or remembered a lot about and began making notes about them. The article should have a headline that grabs the reader's attention, as well as a small drawing that helps the writing. The writing should include the name of the character, and some description about that character (age, co

Thursday March 5

It was an exciting day full of practicing and of course the dress rehearsal of all the plays that were worked on this week. When we were not practicing our lines or getting our costumes, the class worked on their research or writing up their short paragraph explaining why their Canadian person should be considered for the $5 bill. We also fit in a Thinking Thursday problem to solve in the afternoon after the dress rehearsal. Oh and we practiced division using the partial quotient method.  The afternoon was mostly getting ready and watching the other classes perform their plays. It was pretty awesome! I highly recommend all parents who can attend tomorrow to come watch the amazing performances by all the classes. It's very entertaining and I am sure you will get a laugh.  Reminders: - tomorrow is performance day....beginning at 10:15....get here early to get a seat - next Thursday is Glenbow Museum field trip - order your yearbook by the end of the month A favour to ask O

Wednesday March 4

The kids got their brains working with Word Problem Wednesday this morning. Today we focused on being clear about how they communicated their strategy and solving the problem. They went to music and then came back to class because gym was moved to Monday for this day. We reviewed the math questions that everyone saw how they could be solved in clear and communicative ways. Using words and numbers along with symbols to really explain their thinking was important. After this the class had a big chunk of time to gather facts about their Canadian figure they chose to be considered for the new $5 bill. They used a graphic organizer to help keep their facts organized. Once they have the information needed, which they should now, the next step is to write a short paragraph explaining why their person should be considered for the banknote. In the afternoon, we had our Evergreen Theatre time. Judith came into the room and we grouped up and went to the gym for a short practice session and to s

True or False math work started the day and then the class went to music. Today the class was introduced to long division using the partial quotient method. Using this strategy is more flexible than the traditional method and makes it easier for students to divide larger numbers. As with most strategies in math, knowing the basics is super important in order to make understanding and solving problems more efficient. If students don't know their multiplication basic facts up to 9x9, it makes solving division problems more difficult. Practice, practice practice is the only way to get better at something.  There was a little time before going to gym for students to complete their homework for Evergreen Theatre. This information was used in the afternoon to help with creating their play. Not all information was used mind you. After gym we continued reading our novel Refugee.  Right after lunch, we finished the novel! It was exciting to read the very end and hear how the stories fin
