Monday March 2

Welcome to a new month! This will be an exciting week as our class has Evergreen Theatre time. Each day the class will have practice time and on Friday the class will perform their play for any parent who would like to come and watch.

To begin the day the students had to find their new table and seating arrangement for the month. They then worked on Mental Monday math work, which was all about the 10 times table. There was a short introductory assembly lead by Evergreen Theatre to explain how the next two weeks will go like. Some rules shown as well as some interactive activities with the students. We worked on the March calendar and discovered that there a lot going on this month. Not to mention the last week is Spring Break! This work took us into a different gym time. We were in the gym with the kindergartens from Ms. Aebli's class. We will not have gym on Wednesday, today took the place of that day. After this, we did something kind of fun. We had a paper snowball fight in class. Everyone was given a piece of paper on which they had to write something kind and uplifting on. They had to sign it too. Then we had a snowball fight. At the end, everyone chose one paper ball and we sat in a circle and read out what was written on it, and the author's name. There were some really great kind sayings and uplifting thoughts shared. It was a great way to continue the kindness message from last week. To end the morning, each student chose an important Canadian from history to find information on and write a short paragraph about that person explaining why they should be considered for the new $5 bill.

In the afternoon, Judith from Evergreen Theatre came to the classroom and introduced herself and played the name game to break the ice. She brainstormed with the class about what their play was going to be about. The class has homework tonight for tomorrow. Research and find some information on the following topics relating to the region each student studied for their presentation.

  • Find some natural resources your region is known to have
  • List a few major rivers, lakes or mountains that are in your region
  • Name the major Indigenous People (First Nations) who live in your region
  • List a few characters (type of people...ex; jobs) that could be in the play
  • A few major cities in your region
After Evergreen Theatre time, the class worked on a fun little puzzle page that had them decoding a message using the 7 times table facts. Following and understanding the directions was a challenge for many of the class. It looks like more number puzzles are needed to sharpen their skills. To end the day we worked on completing the skeleton sentence activity from Friday. Some expanded ideas are really good and way more detailed and descriptive.

Reminders:
- there are four students who have not returned their field trip forms. They cannot go on the trip next week without it filled in and brought back.
