Wednesday December 18

Word Problem Wednesday had the students using a pattern to solve for the number of heat-beats there were in 1 minute and in 10 minutes. The heart beat 30 times in 15 seconds when resting. Then the class went to music. We went over the math problem when they got back and had snack. The rest of the morning was finishing their persuasive letters and sharing them with me. Tomorrow the class will find out which letter was more persuasive and which movie had better reasons that fit our learning. In the afternoon, we listened to an episode of 6 Minutes and answered a response question. After this the afternoon was spent working and completing their dot art symbol of Canada in their visual journals. Depending how careful and organized the artist was, their symbol was very recognizable and neat.  Reminders: - PJ day tomorrow...wear your pajamas to school. You may bring in a stuffy if you wish - popcorn tomorrow too if you ordered.....bring some if you didn't... - early dismissal tomo

Tuesday December 17

True or False Tuesday started us off this morning. Students were checking to see if the unknown value given was the correct value or not. For ex: 46 + N = 94, n=52. After this the class had music and then had more time to work on their persuasive letter to me about which movie they would like to watch on Thursday. They are able to write it on the computer as well as find out a little more about the movie to find reasons why it would be a good fit with our learnings so far. This work took until lunch. After lunch we listened to two episodes of 6 Minutes and discussed them from the point of view of  which character would you choose to be and why. Then the class had their special time in the gym to learn some of the skills of playing lacrosse. There was a member of a team in the division below the Roughnecks teaching the students. All students were given a special ticket that admits 2 people to go and watch a Roughneck game for free. Check the tickets for the dates, they are in February

Monday December 16

Mental math this morning was solving for an unknown in an equation that had addition on one side and multiplication on the other. Ex: 21 + 15 = N x 9. Solving for the side that is solvable is the first step and then solving for the unknown. After this we worked on optical art using patterns and a 100 grid. The students were shown some examples of optical art that gives an illusion and then they had time to create their own art illusion. Getting the art to look like it was curving or making a hole was a challenge for some. Sticking to an alternating pattern of black and white geometric shapes and using a ruler for straight lines really helped with any design. Making the illusion of curving required changing the size of the shapes to get it to look like it was getting closer or going further away. Some questions about the design using math reasons followed the creation.  After time was up for working on this, those that needed to print their story did that and then the class was given

Friday December 13

We opened with our Thank You Friday circle and then continued working on our cards for The Alex centre. We started new cards on better paper, because the paper yesterday was just regular and the markers went through the paper and it didn't look very nice. Today we used card stock paper. The cookies and cards will be delivered tomorrow. The cookies are in the freezer staying fresh. The other part of the day was used to introduce Friendology. This is a program of sorts that are organized into sessions and teach about friendships and what it means to be a good friend. There have been some situations of late that this fits well with I think. Everyone can learn to be a good friend and make good choices about who they think are good friends. Reminders: - Food drive is still looking for non perishable food - Clothing drive is on until Thursday next week Calgary Mental Health Clothes Drive Bridlewood School will be collecting items for those who are in need to get through the cold

Thursday December 12

Our Thinking Thursday problems were solving for an unknown value in an equation with both sides of the balance having two addends. Most students are successful with solving these kinds of questions now and they are "becoming easier". After this work we began mixing our ingredients to make our cookie batter. This process took most of the morning. Mixing the butter and sugar was the toughest part because the butter was a little hard. Once it warmed up and got squished it became easier to mix. Before lunch each table group created their cookie balls and added their thumbprints to make heart shapes. After lunch the students listened to 6 minutes and then worked on figuring out how much each batch of cookies cost. The groups were given the cost of either a 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup of ingredient then had to do some calculations to find out how much the recipe cost. In some cases the ingredient amount given with a cost was not the exact amount the recipe called for. For example, a 1/4 c

Wednesday December 11

Word problem Wednesday was about division. The problem could be solved using pictures as well to help show the pages containing 4 pictures each and a total of 32 pictures. After this the class went to music and then gym. After a snack the class worked on typing and printing their stories. If and when they were printed they were given access to Prodigy. Prodigy is a math game on the computer. They were given passwords and usernames if they did not have an account yet, or if they forgot theirs from last year or year before. They should all be linked to this year's class. Some students have taken their information home to play there.  After lunch the class listened to an episode of 6 Minutes and then wrote a response to a question about it. Then we introduced a word sorting activity that focused on the long a and short a sounds in words. Students had to sort the given words into the correct category according to the letter patterns of the words AND the sound the vowel made. For exam

Tuesday December 10

Morning math was proving true or false addition or subtraction equations that had an unknown in it. The unknown was given, but was it correct? The class then went to music and when back we looked at multiplying using the area model. We practiced as a whole class then each student worked to solve 2 questions. One question was a 2 digit times a 1 digit, and the other question was a 2 digit times a 2 digit number. This took us to snack and gym and then we had some personal reading time before lunch.  The number 7 should be on the other side of the box, but it still works out the same. Multiply each number by 7 and then add the totals together to find the product.      7 X 28 = ____________                                              20                            8 7 In the afternoon we discussed quite extensively the 6 minutes episode we heard today and then listened to the next one too. Lots are happening in the story and we are learning more about the

Monday December 9

Mental Math Monday was knowing the basic facts of multiplication. There are some students who would benefit from practicing their facts so they are more confident. After this the class were given the opportunity to help make the season a little more cheerful for some of the less fortunate. The class jumped at the opportunity to do some good! We are going to bake cookies for an organization called the The Alex. This organization supports youth at risk. We also just found out that a retirement home complex in the area would love some cookies, so we will give them some as well. After this decision was made we looked at the recipe for thumbprint cookies and did some math around figuring out how much of each ingredient would be needed to make 6 times the single batch. Below, you will find a chart of how much of everything we need. Students were quick to say that they would like to help bring in the materials needed. The names are given for those who thought they could supply ing
