Wednesday December 4

We started the day with a word problem to solve. It was solved using unknowns. The trickiest part of the problem was understanding the wording. Here is the problem to try at home or have your child show how they solved it.

Word Problem Wednesday

Steve is a birdwatcher. On one of his walks he saw a total of 28 birds. He saw twice as many chickadees as blue jays. He saw three fewer blue jays than woodpeckers. He saw one bald eagle and 10 chickadees. He also saw some herons.

How many herons, blue jays and woodpeckers did he see?

After going over the problem with the class, they went to music and then gym. Once back, we brainstormed ways to write the ending of our story so that it had an opinion about what era was preferred and included supporting reasons. There was not much typing or revising time due to a fire drill.

In the afternoon the class listened to another episode of 6 Minutes and then responded to a question about how Birdie might feel in the story. A lot of students feel she might feel left out or sad. After this work we discussed some of the artifacts that were observed. These artifacts and the information shared could be used in the student's stories. Hopefully if they were listening and engaged, some of this information will make it into their Native era part. Then we finished explaining why the groups created the categories for the images of ecosystems. At the end of the day we were told to make a decision about Bridlewood Wetlands and whether we thought it was healthy or unhealthy. Students had to write a short paragraph explaining their opinion and give as many supportive reasons why they thought so. Then they put their avatar on the sliding scale on the board. Most students are somewhere in the middle, which means not many people believe the wetlands is really all that healthy. Interesting! I wonder if some opinions will change over time?
