Tuesday November 12

Welcome back to a new week. True or False Tuesday started us off on the right foot to get our brains working again after a long weekend. The class had music and then worked on subtraction practice. Today students could use any strategy, even the new exploding dots method taught today, to solve straight up subtraction problems. It was encouraged to perform a double check to make sure the answer was correct. The class worked on math until gym and then we read from Refugee. 

 After lunch we continued the section of reading then responded to a question about the book. Both Mahmoud and Josef's family were told that they would have to wait until tomorrow to get what they desperately wanted, which was to get on a boat to freedom, or get off a boat to freedom. How this would make them feel was the question. After working on this, we discussed Citizenship, Character in Learning and Personal Growth through Learning. After explaining and discussing what each of these learning areas are and how they are assessed, each student filled out an 'I can' self-assessment reflection about themselves using a scale of always, sometimes and requires support. The next part of this is giving examples of strengths and areas of growth to focus on. There was a short amount of time to continue writing their stories and then at the end of the day the class began listening to a oral story given in 6 minutes episodes. We were not able to finish the first episode so will finish it tomorrow. This may not be an everyday activity, but then maybe it will be.

Wednesday Sept. 25

The challenge this morning was to think of something you would change if you could go back in time. It could have been something very personal to do with you, or it might be something more worldly to make our community or planet a better place to live. The day was very different after this. The class had music and gym as normal but the rest of the day was working cooperatively with room 53 and 53 to learn more about Phyllis Webstad and Orange Shirt Day. Together the classes heard a story book about the origins of Orange Shirt day and what happened to Phyllis when she was only 6 years old. The students made posters to display and advertise the importance of this recognition.  In the afternoon the classes were together again and had to make a group of 3 students, one from each class so students had a chance to work with new people. Thursday March 12

It was a great day at the Glenbow Museum. The students had fantastic programs in the morning and afternoon. They looked at art through the lens of one of the people or objects in the art using the senses of SIGHT, HEARING, SMELL, FEELING and I WONDER. Students used these observations and created poetry. It was beautiful. Students also had the opportunity to create their own art piece from the senses of SMELL, TOUCH, HEARING and SIGHT. Students were shown multiple exhibits and given opportunity to sketch their favourites or pieces that caught their interest. It was a great day and I thank the parent volunteers who joined us and made it possible.  Reminders: - no Evergreen Theatre performance tomorrow for parents or public to watch - there are no conferences next week - please read the previous blog for more info and check your school messenger

Tuesday December 10

Morning math was proving true or false addition or subtraction equations that had an unknown in it. The unknown was given, but was it correct? The class then went to music and when back we looked at multiplying using the area model. We practiced as a whole class then each student worked to solve 2 questions. One question was a 2 digit times a 1 digit, and the other question was a 2 digit times a 2 digit number. This took us to snack and gym and then we had some personal reading time before lunch.  The number 7 should be on the other side of the box, but it still works out the same.
