For Word Problem Wednesday the class solved a pattern word problem. Making a chart was a great help to solve because it showed a visible number pattern from which to find the rule. After this we looked at a new type of problem involving unknowns. We used a mobile as our balance system and had to work with the values given in order to find the missing values. The trick was to make sure the mobile stayed balanced. There was lots of mental math going on. The questions today were pretty easy and obvious but they will get more challenging. The class had music and gym and then worked on typing their stories. 

 After an indoor lunch because it was too cold to be outside, the class listened to 6 minutes and then read personally for a short time. Then the class worked on a practice page of addition questions so they didn't forget the process. We had a quick movement break then discussed and learned about the different Native Treaties that Canada has made with the many different First Nations bands throughout Canada. If you didn't know, we live in Treaty 7 which was signed in 1877. Alberta has 5 different treaties all signed at different times, but Calgary is part of Treaty 7.

The challenge this morning was to think of something you would change if you could go back in time. It could have been something very personal to do with you, or it might be something more worldly to make our community or planet a better place to live. The day was very different after this. The class had music and gym as normal but the rest of the day was working cooperatively with room 53 and 53 to learn more about Phyllis Webstad and Orange Shirt Day. Together the classes heard a story book about the origins of Orange Shirt day and what happened to Phyllis when she was only 6 years old. The students made posters to display and advertise the importance of this recognition.  In the afternoon the classes were together again and had to make a group of 3 students, one from each class so students had a chance to work with new people. Thursday March 12

It was a great day at the Glenbow Museum. The students had fantastic programs in the morning and afternoon. They looked at art through the lens of one of the people or objects in the art using the senses of SIGHT, HEARING, SMELL, FEELING and I WONDER. Students used these observations and created poetry. It was beautiful. Students also had the opportunity to create their own art piece from the senses of SMELL, TOUCH, HEARING and SIGHT. Students were shown multiple exhibits and given opportunity to sketch their favourites or pieces that caught their interest. Tuesday December 10

Morning math was proving true or false addition or subtraction equations that had an unknown in it. The unknown was given, but was it correct? The class then went to music and when back we looked at multiplying using the area model. We practiced as a whole class then each student worked to solve 2 questions. One question was a 2 digit times a 1 digit, and the other question was a 2 digit times a 2 digit number. This took us to snack and gym and then we had some personal reading time before lunch.  The number 7 should be on the other side of the box, but it still works out the same.
