Mental math this morning was solving for an unknown in an equation that had addition on one side and multiplication on the other. Ex: 21 + 15 = N x 9. Solving for the side that is solvable is the first step and then solving for the unknown. After this we worked on optical art using patterns and a 100 grid. The students were shown some examples of optical art that gives an illusion and then they had time to create their own art illusion. Getting the art to look like it was curving or making a hole was a challenge for some. Sticking to an alternating pattern of black and white geometric shapes and using a ruler for straight lines really helped with any design. Making the illusion of curving required changing the size of the shapes to get it to look like it was getting closer or going further away. Some questions about the design using math reasons followed the creation. 

 After time was up for working on this, those that needed to print their story did that and then the class was given the task of writing a persuasive letter to their teacher about which movie they think would be a good choice to watch on Thursday morning. Students were able to work with a partner to choose a movie and discuss their reasons. There were parameters for a movie which were: the movie has to relate to what we have or are learning about so far. Ex.( ecosystems, pollution, trying to correct a problem, making or trying to fix a relationship that has been broken, a movie about natives or settlers and how the land has been used, how people are trying to make the environment a better place).

 In the afternoon, the class listened to another episode of 6 minutes and then responded to a question. Today's question was giving reasons why they didn't think the new principal was being honest or caring when she came to the house looking for Holiday. Then we introduced an art activity using dots and any symbol that represents Canada. We didn't have any time to begin our activity because we were called down to the gym to listen to the grade 4/5/6 choir as well as sing carols. The day was pretty much over when singing was done.

Mental Math Monday was knowing the basic facts of multiplication. There are some students who would benefit from practicing their facts so they are more confident. After this the class were given the opportunity to help make the season a little more cheerful for some of the less fortunate. The class jumped at the opportunity to do some good! We are going to bake cookies for an organization called the The Alex. This organization supports youth at risk. We also just found out that a retirement home complex in the area would love some cookies, so we will give them some as well. After this decision was made we looked at the recipe for thumbprint cookies and did some math around figuring out how much of each ingredient would be needed to make 6 times the single batch. Below, you will find a chart of how much of everything we need. Students were quick to say that they would like to help bring in the materials needed. Morning math was a review of patterns and pattern rules. The pattern was given and students had to figure out the rule that fit the pattern to make it work. Then we focused on area and reviewed how to find the area of a rectangle. Knowing that A= L x W helped in finding all the rectangles with the area of 12 square centimeters. Students had to understand that 3x4 was a slightly different rectangle than 4x3 even though the sides were the same values. The position of the rectangle mattered (horizontal or vertical). Students then had to find all the rectangles for 16 square centimeters or 24 square centimeters using graph paper. Outlining and shading in the rectangles along with writing the equation for each rectangle was expected. In literacy we read an article about disappearing birds and used thinking notes to make small notes while reading. Students were given the chart of the different thinking note symbols to use. Thursday January 9

Today's mental math was a puzzle of unknowns. Students had to solve for the unknown numbers in different equations before they could solve the final question challenge. Looking for the easiest or at least the equation that has the most information given has been a good strategy to begin with when solving these kinds of puzzles. We then turned our attention to defining what area is and then finding the area of a couple of shapes. We defined area as how much space there is inside a flat shape, or the amount of space a shape covers. Today we began with rectangles and used A= SxS. The class had gym in the morning and we also listened to an episode of 6 minutes.  It was an indoor lunch, so the students came back to the room after they ate and played games or other activities.  After lunch we read another chapter of Refugee and then learned another job in the literature circles.
