Monday December 9

Mental Math Monday was knowing the basic facts of multiplication. There are some students who would benefit from practicing their facts so they are more confident. After this the class were given the opportunity to help make the season a little more cheerful for some of the less fortunate. The class jumped at the opportunity to do some good! We are going to bake cookies for an organization called the The Alex. This organization supports youth at risk. We also just found out that a retirement home complex in the area would love some cookies, so we will give them some as well. After this decision was made we looked at the recipe for thumbprint cookies and did some math around figuring out how much of each ingredient would be needed to make 6 times the single batch. Below, you will find a chart of how much of everything we need. Students were quick to say that they would like to help bring in the materials needed. The names are given for those who thought they could supply ingredients. We will bake on Thursday afternoon, but please bring in any supplies early if you can.

After this math, the class worked on getting their stories completed. This is the last week for typing.

In the afternoon, the class listened to the next episode of 6 minutes and then responded to the story by making a connection to a character or an event that happened. We discussed the different types of connections good readers make when they read. Text-text, text-self and text-world. It is important when making connections that supportive reasons and specific examples are given to describe the connection.

After this the class worked on two art critiques. This gave each student an opportunity to be a critic of someone else's artwork in a positive manner. By giving their opinion about two questions and giving supportive reasons explaining why, students were able to show subjective opinions and use their own ideas to give suggestions to others.

Reminders:
- tomorrow is special lunch if ordered
- Thursday is cookie baking
- Don't forget to help the less fortunate by donating food items in the boxes at the front of the school
