Word problem Wednesday was about division. The problem could be solved using pictures as well to help show the pages containing 4 pictures each and a total of 32 pictures. After this the class went to music and then gym. After a snack the class worked on typing and printing their stories. If and when they were printed they were given access to Prodigy. Prodigy is a math game on the computer. They were given passwords and usernames if they did not have an account yet, or if they forgot theirs from last year or year before. They should all be linked to this year's class. Some students have taken their information home to play there. 

 After lunch the class listened to an episode of 6 Minutes and then wrote a response to a question about it. Then we introduced a word sorting activity that focused on the long a and short a sounds in words. Students had to sort the given words into the correct category according to the letter patterns of the words AND the sound the vowel made. For example: CVC is short a, CVCe is long a, and CVVC is long a. There was an oddball category too, which two words from the list fit. It was interesting to see that some students just used the letter patterns to categorize the words and didn't really listen to the sound of the vowel. Attention to detail and focus! At the end of the day we looked at what good readers and authors do and use to make emotions or settings more clear. We looked at the Access Lens and then used the book Dot to show how the author used many of the lenses to show the reader the emotion the character was feeling. More work will be done with this in the future.

Calgary Mental Health Clothes Drive
Bridlewood School will be collecting items for those who are in need to get through the cold winter. This initiative is in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CHMA) work to help people in the Calgary community.

We will be starting our collection of donations at Bridlewood School starting December 5th at Parent- teacher interviews and will collect items until Dec. 19th.

Items we will be collecting include:
Toiletries: Soap, shampoo, conditioner, other bath items, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, feminine hygiene products, shaving cream and razors, manicure and pedicure nail sets, Chapstick, comb, hairbrush, Kleenex, deodorant and hair elastics

Clothing (All sizes men and women. Items do not have to be new, but in good to excellent and clean condition). Winter jackets, winter boots, snow pants, scarves, winter hats, mittens, gloves, thermal socks (must be new), thermal underwear, underwear (must be new), sweatpants, sweatshirts, plain t-shirts, jeans and wallets

Mental Math Monday was knowing the basic facts of multiplication. There are some students who would benefit from practicing their facts so they are more confident. After this the class were given the opportunity to help make the season a little more cheerful for some of the less fortunate. The class jumped at the opportunity to do some good! We are going to bake cookies for an organization called the The Alex. This organization supports youth at risk. We also just found out that a retirement home complex in the area would love some cookies, so we will give them some as well. After this decision was made we looked at the recipe for thumbprint cookies and did some math around figuring out how much of each ingredient would be needed to make 6 times the single batch. Morning math was a review of patterns and pattern rules. The pattern was given and students had to figure out the rule that fit the pattern to make it work. Then we focused on area and reviewed how to find the area of a rectangle. Knowing that A= L x W helped in finding all the rectangles with the area of 12 square centimeters. Students had to understand that 3x4 was a slightly different rectangle than 4x3 even though the sides were the same values. The position of the rectangle mattered (horizontal or vertical). Students then had to find all the rectangles for 16 square centimeters or 24 square centimeters using graph paper. Outlining and shading in the rectangles along with writing the equation for each rectangle was expected. Thursday January 9

Today's mental math was a puzzle of unknowns. Students had to solve for the unknown numbers in different equations before they could solve the final question challenge. Looking for the easiest or at least the equation that has the most information given has been a good strategy to begin with when solving these kinds of puzzles. We then turned our attention to defining what area is and then finding the area of a couple of shapes. We defined area as how much space there is inside a flat shape, or the amount of space a shape covers. Today we began with rectangles and used A= SxS. The class had gym in the morning and we also listened to an episode of 6 minutes.  It was an indoor lunch, so the students came back to the room after they ate and played games or other activities.  After lunch we read another chapter of Refugee and then learned another job in the literature circles.
