Wednesday Sept. 18
Challenge this morning was adding amounts from a word problem. Reading and understanding the problem and then knowing what operation was needed to solve the question was tricky for some. Obviously more practice at solving word problems is required this year. After this the class learned a new math game. This game is called Race to 1000. The game requires knowledge of place values and adding values together using base ten blocks and a place value mat. As an added skill, one that all students are required to know by know, is multiplying. Students were to multiply two dice when rolled, so 6x6 were the highest multiplying factors in this game. Each student was required to record each roll and equation on a chart that was glued into their books. Some rules may be tweaked in the future so larger numbers are used and the goal of reaching 1000 is attainable more quickly. The class had music and gym during this time as well. Also the grade 5s who wanted to be a patroller had the training session with Constable Gemma in the gym this morning. There is one more training session tomorrow at lunch and then the cards will be handed out.
In the afternoon, the class had some quiet reading time along with time to write a brief summary of what they were reading in their challenge book. We then tried to get as much as we could done on our portraits.
Reminders:
- open house tomorrow evening from 4:30 to 6:00
- Friday is no school
