Morning math started with some mental math questions. It reviewed expanded form, using base ten blocks, writing numbers in words and there was one subtraction question that was not really mental math....oops. The students then worked on their plant riddles and sharing them with the teacher. If they got finished this, they were able to blindly choose from the animal lottery and create a riddle for that animal. This activity took the class until math where they practiced addition using the exploding dots method. To double check students could use any strategy they wished. Most students have shown understanding of this strategy.

 In the afternoon the challenge question was to define what bullying is and explain what to do if someone was being bullied. This was a review of the Dare to Care presentation the class had a couple of weeks ago. A lot of students have a general idea of what a bully is, however most forgot that in order to be considered a bully, the interaction has to be ongoing (more than a week) and on purpose. If it only happens a couple of times it is considered a conflict. We finished up the day by watching the end of the Recycling Plastics video on Market Place. It was really interesting and an eye opener to find out that only 9% of plastics being recycled are actually recycled the way they should be. The other 91% is either burned or dumped in the landfill. Makes us think about what needs to be changed to make a difference.

Morning math was a review of patterns and pattern rules. The pattern was given and students had to figure out the rule that fit the pattern to make it work. Then we focused on area and reviewed how to find the area of a rectangle. Knowing that A= L x W helped in finding all the rectangles with the area of 12 square centimeters. Students had to understand that 3x4 was a slightly different rectangle than 4x3 even though the sides were the same values. The position of the rectangle mattered (horizontal or vertical). Students then had to find all the rectangles for 16 square centimeters or 24 square centimeters using graph paper. Outlining and shading in the rectangles along with writing the equation for each rectangle was expected. In literacy we read an article about disappearing birds and used thinking notes to make small notes while reading. Students were given the chart of the different thinking note symbols to use. Mental Math Monday was knowing the basic facts of multiplication. There are some students who would benefit from practicing their facts so they are more confident. After this the class were given the opportunity to help make the season a little more cheerful for some of the less fortunate. The class jumped at the opportunity to do some good! We are going to bake cookies for an organization called the The Alex. This organization supports youth at risk. We also just found out that a retirement home complex in the area would love some cookies, so we will give them some as well. After this decision was made we looked at the recipe for thumbprint cookies and did some math around figuring out how much of each ingredient would be needed to make 6 times the single batch. Thursday January 9

Today's mental math was a puzzle of unknowns. Students had to solve for the unknown numbers in different equations before they could solve the final question challenge. Looking for the easiest or at least the equation that has the most information given has been a good strategy to begin with when solving these kinds of puzzles. We then turned our attention to defining what area is and then finding the area of a couple of shapes. We defined area as how much space there is inside a flat shape, or the amount of space a shape covers. Today we began with rectangles and used A= SxS. The class had gym in the morning and we also listened to an episode of 6 minutes.  It was an indoor lunch, so the students came back to the room after they ate and played games or other activities.  After lunch we read another chapter of Refugee and then learned another job in the literature circles.
