For mental Monday we practiced adding numbers that contained friendly numbers. Some questions were very easy using smaller numbers, the bigger numbers caused some challenges. Friendly numbers are numbers that add to 10, or 20 or any number that has a zero at the end. These numbers can/should be added very quickly in your mind without needing to write anything down. After this practice, the class used white boards to show how they subtract two numbers. We are beginning subtraction and are focusing on the traditional method first. We are identifying when there is 'trouble' and the top digit needs help from its neighbour to complete the subtraction. We are focusing on this strategy as the first method because it causes a lot of confusion since it is so abstract. We will practice the exploding dots method as well later to add more conceptional understanding to this skill. The class had a short time on the computers to finish up their haiku poems and plant and animal riddles. Then the class was given their election reading comprehension back and had the task of going back to the text and locating the information that answers the question. Students had to circle the section of the reading and put the question number that information answers to prove that they located it and therefore were correct. 

 It was an indoor lunch because it the was so cold and windy. Students were in their classrooms playing games when they were not eating in their designated sections.

 After this, the class worked on a challenge book question about why the school has rules. We read more of Refugee and students responded to the question about why Josef was not playing around with the other children his age. We had an indoor movement break then shifted attention to beginning the writing of the story about going back in time to the time period when the First Nations lived on the land, as well as when the Settlers lived on the land, and of course us in the Modern time.

Morning math was a review of patterns and pattern rules. The pattern was given and students had to figure out the rule that fit the pattern to make it work. Then we focused on area and reviewed how to find the area of a rectangle. Knowing that A= L x W helped in finding all the rectangles with the area of 12 square centimeters. Students had to understand that 3x4 was a slightly different rectangle than 4x3 even though the sides were the same values. The position of the rectangle mattered (horizontal or vertical). Students then had to find all the rectangles for 16 square centimeters or 24 square centimeters using graph paper. Outlining and shading in the rectangles along with writing the equation for each rectangle was expected. In literacy we read an article about disappearing birds and used thinking notes to make small notes while reading. Students were given the chart of the different thinking note symbols to use. Monday December 9

Mental Math Monday was knowing the basic facts of multiplication. There are some students who would benefit from practicing their facts so they are more confident. After this the class were given the opportunity to help make the season a little more cheerful for some of the less fortunate. The class jumped at the opportunity to do some good! We are going to bake cookies for an organization called the The Alex. This organization supports youth at risk. We also just found out that a retirement home complex in the area would love some cookies, so we will give them some as well. After this decision was made we looked at the recipe for thumbprint cookies and did some math around figuring out how much of each ingredient would be needed to make 6 times the single batch. Thursday January 9

Today's mental math was a puzzle of unknowns. Students had to solve for the unknown numbers in different equations before they could solve the final question challenge. Looking for the easiest or at least the equation that has the most information given has been a good strategy to begin with when solving these kinds of puzzles. We then turned our attention to defining what area is and then finding the area of a couple of shapes. We defined area as how much space there is inside a flat shape, or the amount of space a shape covers. Today we began with rectangles and used A= SxS. The class had gym in the morning and we also listened to an episode of 6 minutes.  It was an indoor lunch, so the students came back to the room after they ate and played games or other activities.  After lunch we read another chapter of Refugee and then learned another job in the literature circles.
