Thursday October 17

Morning math was solving for different unknowns using clues. It was wonderful to hear some of the students 'get it' after just a little guidance. This type of thinking will get easier the more we do it. Students need to have an understanding of number and be able to find clues that are easy to begin. We used the computers to continue finding information on their plant and then finding a image of it too. Students are using Google Docs, which is part of Google Drive to share their riddle and image with me. This information will be made into a matching game when all the students have completed and shared their information. Students had more time to work on their Ann and Sandy Cross reflection this morning and go to gym. The morning also had our first lock down of the year. It was a practice of course, and we did very well being quiet and still in the classroom.

In the afternoon, the challenge question was to explain how students could make their ecological footprint smaller. Naming ways to do this was not that difficult, however explaining how it makes their ecological footprint smaller was more of a challenge and separated the deep thinkers from the surface thinkers. We reviewed addition using exploding dots and also reading large numbers into the thousands. To end the day we began learning about Haikus. This Japanese form of poetry has 3 lines and follows a 5 syllable, 7 syllable, 5 syllable count for each line. Students had some practice counting syllables for different words and some of them had time to create their own haiku. Haikus are mostly written about something in nature, which fits perfectly with our field trip experience.
