Monday January 27
Mental Monday was solving KenKen puzzles. These are number puzzles that can only use certain numbers and each bolded in section has a different value to find using given operations. The number of boxes along one side of the puzzle tells what numbers you are allowed to use. For example, there are 4 boxes to one side, that means numbers 1-4 are only allowed.
After this the class worked on solving the challenging problem of finding a shape that had the area twice the number of the perimeter. It was easy for the students to find a shape with the perimeter twice the number of the area, but more difficult this way. Students could work in groups or independently, and they could use blocks. It took a lot of time but there was one group that figured out one of the correct shapes by themselves. Another group needed support to guide them to the correct result, and the rest of the class didn't find a solution. Understanding that there is more than one way to make a certain rectangular shape with a given area is important and helpful. Also knowing what twice means and how these numbers relate to area and perimeter.
Then the class was introduced to the social studies project about the different regions in either Alberta or Canada. This project is a research project and students are able to choose one region to find information about that answer certain questions. Students have a choice of how to present their learnings and can use books or the internet to locate information and pictures.
Today is Family Literacy Day, so in the afternoon the class was read a favourite picture book of mine called Michael Recycle Meets Litterbug Doug. Then Ms. Gordon came in to our class and Mr. Mori went to her class and each class was read a different favourite book. Good exposure to different books and reasons why they are favourites literature. We then read another chapter from Refugee and shared some questions we had about this section.
To end the day the class worked in their literacy circle groups and continued reading and working on a new role. There is another day to work and complete the role work and share and discuss each persons findings as well as any other questions or ideas each person had about that section.
Reminders:
- Friday is a PD day
