Math mobile puzzles got our brains thinking this morning. These seemed pretty easy, so that means the class is beginning to understand them better and we can move into more challenging mobiles! Then we really challenged our brains with thinking and creating rectangles or even irregular shapes using cubes, given certain guidelines. For example; make a shape that has the same area and perimeter numerical number (the area and perimeter number need to be the same). Another question was, make a shape that has the perimeter twice the number as the area. Understanding what area is and what perimeter is was a necessity as well as how to find these measurements. We had snack then discussed and showed a couple of solutions for these questions before going to gym. We read Mahmoud's chapter when we came back and made a prediction about what might happen to them next after being held at gun point by a taxi driver in Serbia.

In the afternoon, we had time to complete our first round of literature circle roles. Some groups were able to begin a second round if they were all finished reading and did a sharing time with their group of their role. If they were able to begin a second role round, they had to choose a new role to be in and read together as a group. Some groups needed re-direction as they were not following the rules of the activity properly. Being the first round of roles, it was good to have this clarified now. At the end of the day, we began working on a concept map. The grade 4s topic was the regions of Alberta and the grade 5s was the regions of Canada. The main idea with this activity is to draw from all previous knowledge and use some logical inferences based on the names of the regions. Students could write or draw pictures about the climate and weather, the type of landforms found in each region, where they thought the region was located, what kinds of animals might live in these regions, anything really. More time will given to complete this activity.
