Welcome back to a new year and decade! The class settled nicely today and got right to work solving some true and false math equations. It was using the brain again in ways not used in a couple of weeks. Remembering basic facts and strategies to solve multiplication, addition and subtraction equations was challenging for some! After this brain warm-up, the morning was full of music and January calendar along with gym and a literacy word sort activity based from the Words Their Way program. The word sort was focused on the long O and short O sound. Given words containing these sounds had to be sorted into proper categories according to the vowel sound heard and the letter patterns in the words. The categories were CVC, CVCe, CVVC and oddball, because the English language has many words that do not fit the mold when it comes to spelling and sounds.

After lunch, we read from the class novel Refugee. It has been awhile since we read and it was good to get back into it. The class worked on a summarizing the section we read today. We learned that a summary is a shorter version of the whole passage and contains the big ideas and characters present only. Summaries need to be in our own words and not taken from the reading word for word. As a class we wrote jot notes to use, and then wrote a summary of pages 153-156 together as a class. Students then copied this summary into their literacy books as an example to use when they are to create their own summaries.

Reminders:
- report cards go home this Friday
