Tuesday January 28
True and False Tuesday was proving whether or not the area of a rectangle was correct, proving if a side length was correct given the other needed information. Basically practicing and applying understanding of area and perimeter. Music followed and then the class had a chance to renew or exchange library books. Then we really had to review and explain what area and perimeter are, as well as explain how to find each of these measurements for a rectangle. There will be an assessment on these two concepts later this week, so we are really focusing on being able to explain and show what they are. The class had gym in the morning too.
In the afternoon, we read a couple of chapters from Refugee about Isabel and Mahmoud. We are not sure what will happen to Isabel since they are being stopped by the US Coast Guard before they reach land. We found that Mahmoud's family had to pay a lot of money (double the original cost) at gun point and then had to get out of the taxi and walk. They are now at the Hungarian border, but are not allowed to cross.
After this the class worked in their literacy circle groups and finished the role from yesterday. There is still a lot of students getting used to how circles work and the importance of discussing each person's role with everyone, before choosing a new role and reading another chapter or chapters of the book. With more practice this activity will become more streamlined.
At the end of the day, the class looked at and discussed the two finished projects using elastics. The two objects were very similar in design as both groups decided to make cars that move using elastics. The designs both worked and were able to move under their own power. Students shared some of their reasons why they would choose one car over the other and most of the comments were about the way the wheels were wobbly or the ability to carry a load.
Reminders:
- Friday is a PD day
