We did our Thank You Friday circle and collected the weather data first thing this morning. Some nice thank-yous were heard today. After this we read an article from the Calgary Herald from last year about a Calgarian named Cheri Macaulay. She was someone who made an impact on trying to make Calgary a kinder place. After reading the article, the class brainstormed some things that kindness means to them. There was quite a list! We discussed that acts of kindness could be very small or big and that it didn't really matter as long as it was making someone's life a little better. The class wrote one or two of the things that kindness means to them on a large piece of paper that will be used as a school art piece next week. Speaking of next week, Mayor Nenshi will be joining our school for an assembly on Thursday to talk about kindness and what that means to him.

 This week was our extra gym week, so we went to gym and played some running tag games. After this we watched a Magic School Bus video about clouds. Students took notes about everything they thought was important in their visual journals. We discussed and shared some of the information they wrote down. This gave students a chance to add to their notes.

“How to pay for a Yearbook online”

Because the yearbook is an optional fee, the fee does not automatically appear in your MYCBE/PowerSchool account. 

You will find the fee under the Goods/Services tab, click on the tab and you will see two optional fees

Click on the fee you want, hit ok, the fee will then appear in your school fees, for online payment.

If you have any issues with this, please call the office we can attach the optional fees.

Mental Math Monday was knowing the basic facts of multiplication. There are some students who would benefit from practicing their facts so they are more confident. After this the class were given the opportunity to help make the season a little more cheerful for some of the less fortunate. The class jumped at the opportunity to do some good! We are going to bake cookies for an organization called the The Alex. This organization supports youth at risk. We also just found out that a retirement home complex in the area would love some cookies, so we will give them some as well. After this decision was made we looked at the recipe for thumbprint cookies and did some math around figuring out how much of each ingredient would be needed to make 6 times the single batch. Morning math was a review of patterns and pattern rules. The pattern was given and students had to figure out the rule that fit the pattern to make it work. Then we focused on area and reviewed how to find the area of a rectangle. Knowing that A= L x W helped in finding all the rectangles with the area of 12 square centimeters. Students had to understand that 3x4 was a slightly different rectangle than 4x3 even though the sides were the same values. The position of the rectangle mattered (horizontal or vertical). Students then had to find all the rectangles for 16 square centimeters or 24 square centimeters using graph paper. Outlining and shading in the rectangles along with writing the equation for each rectangle was expected. In literacy we read an article about disappearing birds and used thinking notes to make small notes while reading. Students were given the chart of the different thinking note symbols to use. Thursday January 9

Today's mental math was a puzzle of unknowns. Students had to solve for the unknown numbers in different equations before they could solve the final question challenge. Looking for the easiest or at least the equation that has the most information given has been a good strategy to begin with when solving these kinds of puzzles. We then turned our attention to defining what area is and then finding the area of a couple of shapes. We defined area as how much space there is inside a flat shape, or the amount of space a shape covers. Today we began with rectangles and used A= SxS. The class had gym in the morning and we also listened to an episode of 6 minutes.  It was an indoor lunch, so the students came back to the room after they ate and played games or other activities.  After lunch we read another chapter of Refugee and then learned another job in the literature circles.
