Wednesday February 26

Weather collection and Word Problem Wednesday started our day. The more we practice reading and solving different kinds of word problems the more efficient the students are getting. The class had music and gym and then they worked in their literature circle groups.

In the afternoon the class read a Canadian Reader article about Buddy Benches. These benches are designed to support anyone (mostly school children) who may feel lonely and need a friend or someone to play with. Some schools across the country use these benches. Friendship benches used in secondary schools more often, are very similar to buddy benches, but these benches have a mental health message about them. The main idea behind reading and discussing this article is that today is Pink Shirt Day. Being aware of how others may be feeling and that being kind and showing kindness is a way to support anti-bullying (Pink Shirt Day). Tomorrow Mayor Nenshi is going to be at the school to help support being kind to others. If you as a parent would like to join us for the assembly, it begins at 10:30.

We then read Refugee. There are only a couple more chapters left and the characters and events are now coming to an end. Today, Isabel and everyone on the little blue boat finally made it to the United States and narrowly escaped from being captured by the American Coast Guard. Isabel's mom gave birth to a baby boy. We are wondering how all the characters connect together still.

After this, the class helped to create a list of events and people that were important to Canadian history that could be potential research material for a project. Using the pictures from the hall museum and background knowledge the class was able to create a nice list of potential people to find more about. More names will be given to them to help them decide along with some sources of information.

Reminders:
- wear purple tomorrow to support and welcome Mayor Nenshi...kindness assembly begins at 10:30
- field trip forms are due back this week please
- volunteer forms need to be returned as well if you have one and are able to volunteer with a police clearance....there are two forms returned so far
