Monday February 10

Mental Monday was all about calculating and solving problems in their heads. Lots of benchmark numbers that should be easy to use. After this the class was given their math check ins and we went over the solutions for all the questions. Students will get both check ins back tomorrow to take home. Then math journals was introduced to the class. This journal will be used to communicate all their understanding about different concepts taught. The first entry will be on area and perimeter. The class was able to see an example from a previous year and different grade level. The sample journal was done very well and demonstrated how to be really organized and really communicate clearly their understanding. The first entry will be very modeled and step by step so each student has a good strong base of expectations.

 After this the class was given their last time to complete their region research and turn it in. There are quite a few students who were not finished in time, and will have to find time to complete it this week.

 After lunch students worked in their literature circle groups and continued reading and working on their roles. Then we discussed some of the different extreme weather conditions that Canada has because it is so big. We talked about hurricanes (Dorian), extreme cold like in the Arctic -68 degrees celsius and blizzards and even ice storms. We didn't get into extreme heat or dry parts of Canada that also are part of our country's weather.

- this is a short week....Wednesday is a full day but there is no school Thursday or Friday and Monday.
- Wednesday is special snack day if ordered

Mental Math Monday was knowing the basic facts of multiplication. There are some students who would benefit from practicing their facts so they are more confident. After this the class were given the opportunity to help make the season a little more cheerful for some of the less fortunate. The class jumped at the opportunity to do some good! We are going to bake cookies for an organization called the The Alex. This organization supports youth at risk. We also just found out that a retirement home complex in the area would love some cookies, so we will give them some as well. After this decision was made we looked at the recipe for thumbprint cookies and did some math around figuring out how much of each ingredient would be needed to make 6 times the single batch. Monday January 13

Morning math was a review of patterns and pattern rules. The pattern was given and students had to figure out the rule that fit the pattern to make it work. Then we focused on area and reviewed how to find the area of a rectangle. Knowing that A= L x W helped in finding all the rectangles with the area of 12 square centimeters. Students had to understand that 3x4 was a slightly different rectangle than 4x3 even though the sides were the same values. The position of the rectangle mattered (horizontal or vertical). Students then had to find all the rectangles for 16 square centimeters or 24 square centimeters using graph paper. Outlining and shading in the rectangles along with writing the equation for each rectangle was expected. In literacy we read an article about disappearing birds and used thinking notes to make small notes while reading. Students were given the chart of the different thinking note symbols to use. Thursday January 9

Today's mental math was a puzzle of unknowns. Students had to solve for the unknown numbers in different equations before they could solve the final question challenge. Looking for the easiest or at least the equation that has the most information given has been a good strategy to begin with when solving these kinds of puzzles. We then turned our attention to defining what area is and then finding the area of a couple of shapes. We defined area as how much space there is inside a flat shape, or the amount of space a shape covers. Today we began with rectangles and used A= SxS. The class had gym in the morning and we also listened to an episode of 6 minutes.  It was an indoor lunch, so the students came back to the room after they ate and played games or other activities.  After lunch we read another chapter of Refugee and then learned another job in the literature circles.
