Wednesday February 5

This morning we did not have a morning math question. Instead the class was given a new task that involves gathering information on the weather for eight different cities in Canada. The activity involves using a computer to find information for the current temperature (as well as real feel), wind speed, humidity and precipitation. Table groups are given a record sheet to record the information and each table will be given a different city each day to continue adding information too. We will do this everyday in the morning for the next 14 days and then graph this information. Since today was the introduction, there was no morning math question. Tomorrow there will be both jobs to complete when they enter the room.

The class had music and gym in the morning. Apparently the class was not on its best behaviour during Mission Impossible and there were quite a few students who did not show proper respect for other students as well as Ms. O. This was quite the opposite behaviour from yesterday. Very surprising and disappointing.

The class had time to continue working on gathering information on their region. Excellent resources were shared with students to help them locate information. Today the grade 5s were given the resource of Mr. Polsky's website. The grade 4s have the learn alberta resource already. Both websites are given below for access at home.

Link to SS websites to help gather information:

In the afternoon we discussed and filled out a questionnaire from Evergreen Theatre. The topic chosen for our class's play is the regions of Canada. The class did some great thinking to respond to the questions asked. These answers will help Evergreen Theatre think of ideas that could be included when the play is created. The play will be created with the class during the week of residency. The first 2 weeks of March is when the residency begins and every class will have one week to create, practice and perform their play.

After this the class was challenged with finding how many sticky notes would be needed to cover all the sides of the filing cabinet. This was using the work from yesterday. Finding the area of all the sides was needed. All the dimensions were given to figure out the areas as well as the dimensions of the sticky note. At the end, to help those students who didn't know where to start or what to do, we worked on organizing and showing all the work as a class.  In the end, we found that the filing cabinet needed 864 sticky notes to cover it. It was quite the challenge, and hopefully students understood that it was all area that was being used.
