Thursday February 27

Thinking Thursday was about finding as many ways to solve the equation ? x ? = 36 or ? x ? = 120... depending on which grade students were in. Everyone was able to find more than one way to make these numbers. Today was the last weather data collection. We will start using this data to help us learn graphing. We helped set up the gym for the assembly by putting out chairs this morning. In math we learned a new game called Leftovers. This is a game that practices and reinforces division using 15 cubes, a die and 6 pieces of paper. The winner is the person who has collected the highest amount of cubes as leftovers from the division equations they were able to make.

We played this game and then played around the world while waiting for the Mayor to arrive so we could begin our Kindness assembly. It was great to see and hear Mayor Nenshi speak about his friend Sheri Macauley and how she really started the city looking at small acts of kindness to make big affects. It was a good assembly with some of the grade 4/5 classes reciting and performing a song called Stone Soup. The assembly went into regular lunch time, so the bells were turned off and everyone started lunch a little later than usual. We had the same amount of time though, students just came back in later than usual in the afternoon.

When everyone was back in class, we read another chapter from Refugee and found out that Mahmoud and his family finally made it to Germany. They were happy and relieved to be welcomed into Germany so warmly by people who lived there. They finally felt safe and accepted. After this the class worked in their literature circle groups and continued reading and discussing their novels. To end the day we looked at the requirements needed to be considered as a nominee for the new $5 bill. Then we quickly reviewed the list of potential Canadians that the class discussed the other day. Other historical people were added to the list to help narrow the focus. Next week, students will choose one person to research on and write up explaining why they think that person should be considered. We watched a couple of Heritage Minutes to get ideas.

Reminders:
- please return field trip forms
- payment is easiest online using your CBE account, cash is acceptable too
- practice kindness towards others....small or big
