Thursday February 20

Our morning math was a review of how to solve equations with an unknown as one of the addends. It was nice to see that many students were able to solve these questions with little trouble. We collected our weather data as well first thing this morning. Then the grade 4s did their accountability pillar survey with Ms. Lambrinoudis. While the grade 4s were out, the grade 5s worked on an area and perimeter art activity where they had to create an image using only squares and rectangles. Then they had to choose two of their shapes and calculate the area and perimeter of each of them.

Once the whole class was back we began our introduction of division by creating and filling in their own personal Frayer diagram. This is where they have a space to put the definition, some examples of what division is, a space for non examples and a space for writing or showing the characteristics of division. Since this is the first look at division this year, some students didn't have much information to share in their model, but as we learn more about this concept, more information should be added to each category. All students should have some knowledge of what division is at the moment from their learning in previous years.

The class went to gym and then we listened and discussed the next episode of 6 Minutes before lunch.

In the afternoon, we read and responded to a couple of questions from Refugee. Today's chapter was back to Mahmoud and his family's adventure to freedom. We read that Mahmoud decided to not be invisible anymore, and walked right out of the Hungarian detention centre the refugees were being held in. It was a surprise to hear that Waleed chased after him, suddenly snapping out of his listless funk when Mahmoud left the building and began walking away. One question was to predict what might happen next, and the other question was why did Waleed suddenly come to life and go after Mahmoud?

To end the day, we learned about the main three different types of clouds. We learned about stratus, cumulus and cirrus clouds. Each cloud is associated with different kinds of weather and lives at different altitudes in the sky. We looked at our sky today and saw cirrus clouds, which are wisy and thin, like curls of hair. These clouds are very high in the sky and usually mean sunshine is seen. Technical difficulties prevented us from watching a video about clouds, but hopefully tomorrow we can make this happen.

Reminders:
