Thursday March 19 free math website to check out

Hello to all my dear students. I am sure you are feeling a little confused and wondering what this all means. You should have received a message from all the grade 4/5 teachers on Monday. It was and still is very strange in the school with no students. I would like you to know that I, and the entire school are thinking of you and hoping you are being safe and staying healthy. I hope you are trying to practice learning every day, no matter what it may look like. Use some of the ideas from the CBE that were sent out to families the other day. I just received this gift and am passing on the website so that you can have some fun with it. It is from the same site that has the number puzzles we have done in class. There are a lot of other great puzzles and activities for you to try at home. It is given free so no worries about payment. Give it a try and have some fun! https://mashupmath.com/blog/free-homeschool-math-resources Please feel free to drop me an email and check in, it would

Friday March 13

Not sure if it was the fact that it is Friday the 13th or really being ill, but the class was down 7 students today. We had our Thank You Friday circle and discussed some of the news that was released yesterday regarding today and next week. This was the information that was sent home yesterday via school messenger. We worked on the math assessment some more adding more solutions and communicating for how many numbers would make the statement true. We also had time to continue working on our Refugee news article and finishing up the Canadian history figure paragraph. As a special activity, our class along with a few other classes who didn't see the Evergreen performances yesterday, were able to watch the final show today. Sorry the parents were not allowed to come and watch it, but it was video recorded. At some time this year, it will be made available to be seen. Reminders: - there are no conferences next week - Thursday next week is an early dismissal and Friday is a PD day

Thursday March 12

It was a great day at the Glenbow Museum. The students had fantastic programs in the morning and afternoon. They looked at art through the lens of one of the people or objects in the art using the senses of SIGHT, HEARING, SMELL, FEELING and I WONDER. Students used these observations and created poetry. It was beautiful. Students also had the opportunity to create their own art piece from the senses of SMELL, TOUCH, HEARING and SIGHT. Students were shown multiple exhibits and given opportunity to sketch their favourites or pieces that caught their interest. It was a great day and I thank the parent volunteers who joined us and made it possible.  Reminders: - no Evergreen Theatre performance tomorrow for parents or public to watch - there are no conferences next week - please read the previous blog for more info and check your school messenger

Wednesday March 11

This morning we talked about hand washing and being clean. Basic stuff to help remain healthy. We also talked about the field trip tomorrow. Then the class worked on a math activity that is being used as an assessment. This is very similar to the kinds of questions we have worked on the past week. It was all about communicating understanding of multiplication and number sense. More time will given to complete this as we had to go to music and gym. When back in the room the class worked on their paragraph about why their historic Canadian should be considered for the $5 bill. There are a few students who will finish this on their own time now. In the afternoon, the class worked on writing their summary of the Refugee book from one of the characters. They were able to see a model of how their article could be written and the kinds of information to include. They were to complete the graphic organizer to jot down the important facts and events, then begin writing their rough copy in the

Tuesday March 10

Morning math was proving whether an equation was true or not.  It included division, multiplication, adding and subtracting to keep us on our toes. The class went to music and then finished up the morning math and then began some division practice. We are still learning the partial quotient method and most students have an understanding of it. The biggest area of errors is multiplying. Knowing the basic facts and being able to subtract accurately is super important. This work took us to gym time where the class began practicing dribbling as part of basketball skills. When back in class there was time to continue working on their newspaper summary of a character from Refugee. In the afternoon, the class worked in literature circles on their novels and jobs. After this the fours went to Ms. Tanya and the fives came here for health. Reminders: - field trip Thursday, may want to bring hand sanitizer to keep hands clean
